Chic flick

First impressions count. We first spotted relocated Dingwall lads THE CINEMATICS supporting kindred spirits Snow Patrol at the ABC, where they showed very definite signs of pop star potential.
The Cinematics are one of those bands who clearly won’t be happy until they’re filling stadiums. Our next sighting of them was when they braved the elements at last year’s Belladrum festival in Inverness, where singer Scott Rinning practically outed himself as a vision in leather.
Their lofty ambition has won them admirers, not least the mother of their idol Jeff Buckley after they covered the late singer’s Grace. But look no further than Chase, The Cinematics’ very own nugget of perfection, if you want to make your day that little bit better. Better still, hear it live on Saturday, July 7 when they open the King Tut’s stage at T in the Park.

Freeze!

The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Tim Henman at Wimbledon, the Bible… everybody loves an epic. And with SNOW PATROL, we get the musical equivalent of a summer blockbuster.
Their sweeping anthems have finally brought them to their rightful place, playing to thousands as headliners of the main stage at T in the Park on Sunday, July 8. It should be a an epic encounter indeed.
Their Scottish connections are well established. Irishman Gary Lightbody studied at Dundee University where he formed the band that would eventually become the feral beast we now know as Snow Patrol, and Glasgow has been their base ever since.
Today’s offering isn’t officially Snow Patrol, but a duet Gary recently did with Damien Rice’s old pal Lisa Hannigan, who Gary may or may not be sleeping with. It’s called Some Surprise and it’s lovely.

Superstar? DJs?
Wednesday, June 27th, 2007
We started yesterday with The Dykeenies and today we continue our countdown to T in the Park with a look at THE VIEW, who headline the King Tut’s tent on Saturday, July 7.
The Dundonians are a curious band. Wasted Little DJs and Superstar Tradesman rank up there as two of the best indie anthems of the decade. But The Pop Cop’s hopes that their debut album Hats Off To The Buskers would be a Definitely Maybe or a 1977 in the making proved sadly well off the mark.
We weren’t the only ones who were upset. Glasgow band Catcher raised a collective eyebrow when they first heard Superstar Tradesman – they accused The View of ripping off the guitar riff from their song Different City. Download it and make your own mind up…
We’ll leave you with a legitimate cover The View can’t deny – their tremendous version of Paolo Nutini’s Rewind.
