McGuinness is good for you

Ah, love. L-O-V-E, love.
L is for life. And what is life without love?
O is for Oh, wow!
V is for Valentine’s Day and

In fact, watching a Eugene McGuinness gig is a bit like falling in love – if you don’t experience it for yourself, you’ll probably never know what all the fuss is about. The Pop Cop did just that last month at Nice ‘n’ Sleazy, where we found ourselves marvelling at this instantly likeable singer-songwriter.

Raised in Belfast but now based in Liverpool, the 22-year-old oozes confidence and star-quality. But it’s not possible to appreciate just how special his talent is through his recorded output alone, which currently stands at one mini-album and a couple of singles on the Domino label.

Find him on stage, however, and you’ll see a young man playing an acoustic guitar like he was born holding it, throwing his voice around in indiscriminate fashion and singing colourful lyrics so coherent you can make out every word – a much undervalued ability in our book.

For his next visit to Scotland, McGuinness is squeezed on the same bill as The Wombats, To My Boy and Glasvegas. The nice guy finishes first so get there early.
