Live review: General Fiasco @ Stereo, Glasgow

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

GENERAL FIASCO take us back to a time when the greatest guitar pop songs were a simple verse-chorus-verse affair, not the short-sighted ‘synths with everything’ approach that seems to afflict most trend-driven new bands these days.

Watching these three sickeningly youthful boys from Northern Ireland – with their predominantly teenage following hanging on their every word – makes you wonder if this is what life was like in 1994 when Ash first broke through as schoolkids with an uncanny gift for creating three-minute radio-humping hits.

Bass-playing singer Owen Strathern has mini rosary beads hanging from his wrist (not sure if that will catch on as a fashion statement) and is blessed with the easy charm that Irish natives tend to acquire in the womb. He progresses effortlessly from the solo acoustic performance of Sinking Ship to the power-pop singalongs of Rebel Get By and Ever So Shy, thanking the audience profusely for making the effort to come out and see them.

With General Fiasco and The Xcerts, 2009 is witnessing two of the smartest and most likeable young rock bands coming of age – now there’s a future to look forward to.

Flying the flag for Scotland: A year of MAP (2008-09)

Friday, September 25th, 2009

You’re probably aware by now that we started this thing called the Music Alliance Pact. The Pop Cop’s part of the deal is to choose a Scottish song to share with the rest of the world on the 15th of every month, and to celebrate MAP’s 1st birthday (IKEA vouchers would be great, thanks) we’ve decided to compile our 12 selections to date in a single album for you to download for free.

I know what you’re thinking – that’s ‘The Best Scottish Album in the World… Ever!’ Unfortunately, that record already exists so you’re going to have to make do with the less snappily-titled ‘Music Alliance Pact – Scotland 2008-09′. Alas, our version doesn’t contain Donald, Where’s Yer Troosers but it does look like this:

01 Roddy Hart – Dead Of The Night
02 Beerjacket – Drum
03 Dotjr – More Than You Know
04 Evan Crichton – Holiday Time
05 Broken Records – Nearly Home
06 We Were Promised Jetpacks – Ships With Holes Will Sink
07 There Will Be Fireworks – Foreign Thoughts
08 Boycotts – Beat On The Dancefloor
09 The Seventeenth Century – Traffic
10 Maple Leaves – Easy Speak
11 My Cousin I Bid You Farewell – What We Are Eating Tonight
12 The Xcerts – Crisis In The Slow Lane
