Sounds like
Thursday, November 19th, 2009
We’ve only just got around to thinking about challengers for The Pop Cop’s top 10 albums of 2009 list and it’s already proving a bit of a headfuck given that there are so many records which have come out this year that we really, really love.
We won’t spoil the fun by naming all the possible contenders here but it seems certain The Sounds’ third album Crossing The Rubicon will feature prominently.
Quite how we’ve never managed to mention the Swedish band in the 30 months this blog has been on the go for is rather scandalous. They straddle the pop and rock divide with utter conviction and songs like Rock ‘n’ Roll, Seven Days A Week, 4 Songs & A Fight and Dorchester Hotel make them the perfect indie-party soundtrack in a Franz Ferdinand meets Blondie kinda way.
The Sounds used all their own money to record Crossing The Rubicon and founded Arnioki Records to release it. Usually we’d cynically associate this sort of post-major label behaviour as the tell-tale sign of a band’s career on the wane, but that argument is shattered into pieces by the fact that Crossing The Rubicon is The Sounds’ best album by a million miles.
Good enough to take the album of the year crown? Well, you’ll just have to wait and see…

Music Alliance Pact – November 2009
Sunday, November 15th, 2009
We’re so excited about this month’s Music Alliance Pact we could explode since it gives us the exclusive privilege of inviting the world to download an incredible song by Scotland’s best new band of 2010 and makes us want to use exclamation marks in a frenzied fashion!!!
As ever, each country’s mp3 selection and the words that go with them come courtesy of the individual blogs, who simultaneously post the entire collection you see below on their own sites. Here for your pleasure then is the world’s greatest monthly mixtape…
SCOTLAND: The Pop Cop
The Unwinding Hours – Knut
The Unwinding Hours have quietly risen from the ashes of the much-loved Aereogramme and the early evidence suggests they’re going to be every bit as wondrous as their former guise. All the ingredients are there – the gorgeously gentle pacing, the elegant orchestration, Craig B’s yearning vocals. Knut, taken from their self-titled debut album due out early next year on Chemikal Underground, is a MAP exclusive sanctioned by the band and their record label.
January 31, ABC 1, Glasgow (tickets)
