Let’s talk about Tex!

The 14 acts chosen to represent Scotland at next month’s SXSW festival in Austin, Texas cover a wonderfully eclectic mix of genres – from hip hop to electro-pop, and indie-rock to utter cock (it doesn’t take a law degree to figure out which band is being referred to here).

Most of them will be fighting an almighty struggle just to be mentioned in conversation during the five-day blitz, since hundreds of other bands are every bit as desperate to steal the attention of the movers and shakers of the world’s music industry. (The Pop Cop’s invitation must have got lost in the Spam folder or something…)

The transatlantic exodus is headed by the holy trinity of Frightened RabbitWe Were Promised Jetpacks and Broken Records. However, just as in 2007, Dundee group The View won’t be able to take up their invitation as The Land of the Free doesn’t like handing out visas to people convicted of possessing cocaine. At least Kyle Falconer will have a wistful “drugs fuck up careers” story to pass on to the kids.

Of course, it would be pretty naive to assume that Scottish bands are going to be the talk of the town during South By Southwest. So that gives me the perfect opportunity to tell you about the phenomenal New York quintet Freelance Whales, who are quite simple the best new band I’ve heard this year (all 53 days of it). Yes, they have a terrible name but don’t let that put you off. Check out their mesmeric song Location, fall in love a little, get your hands on their debut album Weathervanes, fall in love a lot.

The Pop Cop’s other SXSW tip is Canadian group Yukon Blonde, who aren’t quite as consistently amazing as Freelance Whales, but Wind Blows is stunning in a Fleetwood Foxes kinda way.
