August 1st and everything after

There’s really no escaping the clutches of the Edinburgh Festival during the month of August, loathe it (Edinburgh’s residents) or love it (everybody else).

When it comes to building a cultural itinerary from the thousands of shows on offer, plenty of visitors head to the capital intending to wing it – a courageous but VERY foolish stance given that much of the best stuff will sell out in advance.

From a music point of view, Scotland’s most aesthetically pleasing city hosts a variety of live treats this month, so I’ve tried to come up with as eclectic a list as possible which encapsulates one thing you should check out each day, such as the Retreat! Festival (featuring the likes of Broken Records, FOUND, Meursault, Lady North, Ballboy and The Scottish Enlightenment), the Born To Be Wide Showcase extravaganza, The National, Jimmy Eat World plus a smattering of comedy music acts. And let’s not forget Admiral Fallow AND Kid Canaveral AND Over The Wall under one roof.
