Live blog: Scottish Album of the Year Award 2012
It’s D-Day for the inaugural Scottish Album of the Year Award, with 10 artists vying for the £20,000 first prize at an invite-only ceremony in Film City Glasgow. Fear not if you didn’t manage to blag a ticket, Team Pop Cop is covering all the action here so you won’t miss a thing…
13.17
And we’re live! Welcome to the live running commentary of the SAY Award. It’s lunchtime and I’m more nervous than Martha’s dinner lady.
13.20
As you no doubt know, there are 10 albums on the shortlist, so now’s a good time to pick your favourite. Should we do a poll? Why not…
[poll id="2"]
13.33
My inside man has given me the full rundown on this evening’s schedule, so here’s what’s happening, live music-wise …
19:30-20:00 - Brodie Jarvie Jazz Trio
20:15-20:35 – Electric String Orchestra with Rachel Sermanni, Alasdair Roberts & Vashti Bunyan, Emma Pollock and James Graham (The Twilight Sad)
21:15-21:30 – Holy Esque (yasssssssss!)
22:00-22:15 – Miaoux Miaoux & Profisee
22:25-22:35 – WINNER ANNOUNCED
Obviously this is all SUBJECT TO CHANGE, don’t blame me if it overruns.
13.35
I concur:
@twbf to win the SAYaward in 2016 for their second album. #loveya #chinesedemocracy #axlmcmanus #hurrythefuckup
— LightGuides (@LightGuides) June 19, 2012

Right, I have to get myself to the actual venue and meet up with my hotshot team of live bloggers. Your hosts for the day are all on Twitter – @thepopcop, Natasha Radmehr @natasharadical, Breda Doherty @deadsoundie and Paul Downie @pauldownie86 – see you back here in a couple of hours, look busy…
19.03
We’re back! Me, Paul and Breda are at the venue and it’s half-an-hour till the venue opens. Apologies to the shifty-looking local character who I assumed was loitering around looking for an opportunity to break into our car, when in fact he was just waiting to meet his mum coming off a bus. He even interlinked arms with her as they walked up Govan Road.
19.11
McBookie have stopped taking bets, but these were the odds for each of the nominees:
King Creosote & Jon Hopkins 3/1
Mogwai 4/1
Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat 5/1
Happy Particles 5/1
Twin Atlantic 7/1
Mungo’s Hi Fi 12/1
Rustie 12/1
Conquering Animal Sound 14/1
Remember Remember 16/1
Tommy Smith 16/1
19.13
…but Happy Particles are leading the way in The Pop Cop poll vote (scroll down to 13:20)
19.15
Obviously there’s a certain football match on this evening, so we’ll keep you updated on how the Ukraine v England game is going too. Don’t say we’re not good to you!
19.27
Mogwai and Twin Atlantic are both playing gigs abroad tonight so if either win they won’t be able to pick up their award in person. Twin are in Newcastle, Mogwai are in Pontiac, MI. Why do Americans insist on reducing their states to two letters? How is anyone supposed to know if Mogwai are in Missouri, Michigan or Mississippi? Why America? WHY?
19.31
The Pop Cop has unwisely left me (Breda) in charge of the blogging for a bit. Good night at the Say Awards so far including finding the free drinks…
19.32
The lovely folks at Inner Ear have kindly sorted wifi for us! Go Inner Ear!
19.36
The Popcop is away to the bar leaving us in charge for a minute, Paul ((Pelmet Nites//Comets & Cartwheels) here. Tonight’s awards are kicking off with a free bar courtesy of West Brewary, and I can tell you the beer is cold and the whisky cocktails will blow your pubes off. Muslim Alim was seen earlier looking rather sharp in a grey suit, white shirt, black tie combo on his way to the judging room and we are told Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop is currently finishing her make up in the back of a car en route….
19.58
Obviously at any event in Glasgow you’re bound to see some interesting fashion choices. We’ve just clocked a bunch of guys wearing kilts who didn’t get the memo that this isn’t a wedding and, best of all, two guys wearing trucker caps. They must be in a band. They can’t just be two guys who enjoy wearing trucker hats. Can they?
20.06
We spoke to Jim Gellatly earlier and his personal favourite of the nominees is Twin Atlantic. I’m too scared to walk about asking people who they want to win because a lot of people in here look like Twin Atlantic, and that’d be a total riddy.
20.08
The awards have kicked off! Janice Forsyth and Vic Galloway are on stage. We’re going to have live music tonight from bands who aren’t shortlisted for the award as they didn’t release an album last year. I wonder who…
20.15
We’ve been running around asking people who they’d like to see win this first SAY Award. First up Jim Gellatly said he’d love to see Twin Atlantic winning feeling they best reflect ‘a time and place in Scottish Music.’ However to annoy a friend who unlike Jim isn’t a fan of Rusty he’d also like to see Rusty win to prove that the album is not ‘just noise’.
20.20
Breda here again, I’ve just caught up with Ally McCrae post a stop off in Burger King and heading for the bar to find out who he’d like to see win. His choice is the Happy Particles a band he’s been fond of for a long time before their Christmas day album release. Ally even spent three sleepless days and nights weighing up his choice before deciding yes, yes, it definitely has to be the particles.
And if event organisers decided well Ally is a nice chap let’s just give him the money what would he spend the 20K on? Well a new bus for Detour of course! Maybe the pop cop should start a fund raising campaign to buy the Detour boys a new bus anyway…..?
20.22
Electric String Orchestra and Rachel Sermanni starting the live music with Eggshells. Room is a bit chatty. She might crack.
BOOM!
20.32
It’s Louis from Admiral Fallow and Weaver of Detour fame. Trust me, there are a LOT of beards in the room tonight.
20.34
Challenge accepted
Feel like I am in a bosom of warm musical comfort. Desperately avoiding @thepopcop as he may slag my shite tights #sayaward
— GlasgowPodcART (@glasgowpodcart) June 19, 2012
20.46
Paul here. Things are kicking off on the floor, with Twilight Sad’s James Graham. His stunnning vocals complimenting the Electric String Orchestra. A few predictions being discussed at this point. Personally Ill stick my neck out and say Twin Atlantic would be my own pick, followed by Happy Particles who seem to be widely tipped on the floor tonight alongside Aidan Moffat and Bill Wells. Fiona Hyslop, Culture Secretary will be giving us a few words later on hopefully, while Admiral Fallow are all dressed to impress and will be giving us their thoughts too. Audience being kept on their toes right now by firework like bangs coming from the PA (unintentionally but effective) as the first five albums are anounced…..
20.57
We quickly grabbed 3 lovely members of Happy Particles a band nominated tonight to find out what they think of the awards and their nomination. The guys rightly recognised how the involvement of Stewart Henderson has given the awards more indie credentials and set the awards apart from similar events.
They’d spent the 20K on more recording possibly with Robin Sutherland now based in Finland and a tour of Sweden!
Other than themselves the guys would like to see Mogwai or King Creosote win tonight! F=
20.57
Paul lied about the free bar…
21.02
So, we’ve resolved the trucker cap mystery; one of them is Steg G, one of Glasgow’s finest hip-hop artists. Except we’ve not listened to him yet. I’m sure he’s ace.
The Pop Cop promised to keep you all updated on the football, so here goes… Rooney just scored so England are now winning 1-0. BOOOOOOOOOO!
21.03
We caught up briefly with Aidan Moffat, whose arm is in a sling. Naturally we wanted to know why. ‘Lots of different reasons.’ Um….
21.05
We shall find out the real reason behind Aidan’s sling when we interview him later-well only if he wins he’s said!
21.09
We chatted to Fielding Hope (Cry Parrot) who thinks the main benefit of the award is its highlighting awareness of the diverse Scottish music scene something he feels the top 10 shortlist also shows. He’d like Aidan & Bill or Happy Particles to win, two very popular choices this evening!
If Fielding was given the 20K he’d use it to organise a nice festival. Maybe the Detour boys could drive the bands to the festival in their new van…
21.12
Paul here, back from the bar…. Live music ripping through the venue.
Just located the finest beard at the awards- more to follow….

Andy McColgan (KILTR and So & So) hopes Aidan & Bill win but would also be pleased if either Happy Particles or Conquering Animal Sound picked up the award to show the great newer talent coming out of Scotland.

Holy Esque played four songs live – the highlight of the night so far for me (The Pop Cop). Was watching them next to Miaoux Miaoux, he said they remind him a bit of MBV.
Here’s their song Rose, this is what I’m talking about!

“It’s quite surreal to be in competition with yourself,” says Graeme Ronald, who is twice-nominated with his bands Remember Remember and Happy Particles.

Just grabbed a few words with one of the 10 judges, Muslim Alim, Radio 1 producer, about their choice of winner: “The decision was completely unanimous. It was the only album we all agreed on. As one of the other judges said, ‘It flew out of the CD player’. It’s very Scottish, progressive, plaintive. It’s a duo you wouldn’t have expected to work as well together as it did. Aidan’s the poet of our generation.”

Paul here again for a final farewell.
Tonight’s Scottish Album of the Year Award ceremony was a huge success, with Aidan Moffat & Bill Wells taking the big prize.
But you already knew that. What you might not have seen on Twitter or Facebook are some of the more interesting facts I came across tonight. To start with, I am pretty sure I found the best beard of the night. This belonged to Scott in the stage production team, and I have it on good authority he uses sambuca as conditioner, which got me wondering what other conditioners were on show, as Scotland’s musical and cultural icons gathered tonight.
So for anyone who might be wondering…
Rachel Sermanni uses Timotei, Fiona Hyslop prefers “the one in the red tub”, Louis Abbott refrains from using such a product as it makes his hair greasy, while award winner Bill Wells struggled to remember his magic potion, conceding that it was “one beginning with the letter E…”.
Now, regardless of what product people use in the shower, we all make the most of our bathroom acoustics by singing and I personally was rather excited to discover that Rachel Sermanni belts out the songs of Miss Irenie Rose from Stornoway in the shower.
If you have not heard Irenie Rose, check her out.
At this point, I must concede that I have never ‘blogged’ before tonight, so my own coverage of the SAY Award is somewhat patchy; however I will sign off with this bombshell: If anyone has ever doubted Culture Secretary Fiona Hyslop’s credentials, I have it on good authority that she once auditioned to be the drummer in Orange Juice. #class
