Scotland’s shame: Tucker

Scottish music thrives in its eclecticism but the one thing it glaringly lacks is the sort of shite-pop that makes up the singles chart.

Thankfully, Tucker have arrived to redress the balance. A band from Kilmarnock but now permanently based in Los Angeles, they are signed to Sony/Epic Records and have been taken under the wing of American X Factor judge L.A. Reid.

Clockwise from top-left, they are Jonny Griffen, 21 (bass/vocals), Danny Wilson, 21 (guitar/vocals), Darren “Dez” Black, 20 (drums) and Graeme Hogg, 23 (guitar/vocals). Their debut single hits US radio in the next few weeks but already they’ve amassed a huge teen following on Facebook and Twitter. And here’s how…

Check out their splendid ability to mix playing instruments with faultless choreography (underachieving indie bands take note)…

Along with four others, they co-wrote the title track of Justin Bieber’s latest album Believe, although the Bieber remembers it differently: “This track I wrote for my fans and is about how they inspired me. Listen to the words… it means a lot. I wrote it on my birthday – it was midnight in the studio and Scooter wanted to sing happy birthday to me but I was like, ‘No, let me finish this song!’.” Glory-hunting wee prick.

Tucker, unsurprisingly, have covered the Bieber (WARNING: Unnecessary thrusting at 1:37)…

They really do love whoring themselves out on YouTube reinterpreting other artists’ songs, such as Lady Gaga’s Born This Way, Hanson’s Mmmbop, Woman-Beater & the Bieber’s Next 2 You and Rebecca Black’s Friday.

However, none are as hilarious as Tucker’s desperate attempt to impress Cody Simpson, a 15-year-old Aussie pop phenomenon (apparently), by playing one of his own songs to/at him…

Tucker were called CircleStop! a couple of years ago (Xavia synth player Scott Kirkwood was a founding member) when they were no stranger to gigging in Kilmarnock or King Tut’s in Glasgow and used to play punk-pop, albeit quite badly…

Now that Tucker are living the dream and dressing like a Topman store has collapsed on them, their former CircleStop! manager is pure ragin’. Not only has he hijacked the domain name tuckerofficial.co.uk in order to publicly threaten to sue them, he’s posted a rant on their old MySpace page and put the IMPORTANT words in CAPITAL LETTERS. Uh-oh!

Good luck, Tucker – it’s about time a band put Kilmarnock on the music map. Oh…

Ha! No not their mother. Just someone that would like to stick up for the boys after reading a pathetic attempt to put a dampener on their amazing success so far. They have worked hard to get where they are and personally i think they dumped the baggage at the perfect time. Say what you want about the band or the type of music they play,im pretty sure the sound of their worldwide fan base will drown out your jealous words.

I dunno if that “un-talented fuckwit” was directed at me or The Pop Cop. Perhaps both. Guess we’ll never know.

Oh.. I’d sooner be at one of Michael Barrymore’s pool parties.

As a regular reader of the Pop Cop’s articles (largely) on Scotland’s alternative music scene, this seems a bit of a departure. Why are we being mean to Tucker? Seems like too easy a target. They’re for the kidz. Maybe just let them be.

  13. Suomynona Says:

    July 3rd, 2012 at 14:12

Okay, fair’s fair – these chaps are probably going to live parts of their ‘dream’ (cliched as the whole idea of a ‘dream’ is…)
But surely no-one really dreams of being manipulated and used as an expendable marketing device for cynical industry money-grabbers?
Maybe you’re right though, Tuckerfan – they’re an easy target and possibly one there’s little point in attacking. They must know their ‘product’ is cheap and nasty and my guess is they probably don’t care as it’s lucrative and currently enjoyable.
Everyone, just have a wee biscuit and a lie down.

This article is laughable!! Screams jealousy!! Sounds like xavia (nice choice of name ya wee sac) is just bitter!!

  17. Sock it to The Man Says:

    July 5th, 2012 at 22:42

@The man – I could think of worse names. Like Tucker for instance, or something like Pure Dead Brilliant. Or anything ending in double exclamation!!

On a more serious note, Tucker won’t give two hoots about a site in Scotland (one which doesn’t tend to cater or promote their brand of music) slagging them off. As one (or more – hard to tell) of the Anonymous posters said, they’ll be too busy with pool parties and spending all their money to care. Which is why I don’t understand why anyone else does on their behalf.

And anyway, if they do care, then they (and those around them – as difficult as it must be to have someone slag off something close to you) had better grow some thicker skin if this is hurtful or offensive. Because they’ll be in for far more intense stick, of Bieber proportions, if they do make it big. Which is what you want yes?

Ultimately, with this type of music these days, the screaming 15 year old girls, money, chinos, and all the inappropriate YouTube serenading and thrusting, comes with an equal amount of scorn.

  18. Jim Gellatly Says:

    July 6th, 2012 at 01:08

Dont suppose Tucker are designed for “us”, but heck, that’s verging on a Mr November type assassination.

  19. Suomynona Says:

    July 6th, 2012 at 12:22

I think it’d be a really good idea if everyone just got those biscuits out now. C’mon, biscuit-time, everyone. Aye, you too, Tucker – mon over an dunk a Rich Tea, tell us all about your pool parties and the hot models.
    Leave the guitars but.

Judging by their cheesy Youtube footage, they best enjoy the holiday while it lasts.

This will all be a nice story to tell the lads at Burger King when they’re sent packing back home. ;]

Not that this is my style of music but as a Scot I fail to see why we are so quick to tear down 4 boys who are trying to make something of themselves. We spend too long in this country idolising the benefit frauds, neds and the lazy people who don’t move from their sofa than people who want to make an honest living, its embarrassing. I say good luck to them!

“We spend too long in this country idolising the benefit frauds, neds and the lazy people who don’t move from their sofa”. Is that really true? With the exception of other benefit frauds, neds and lazy people, I literally know of no one else who idolises these people. To say this, then claim that someone else’s opinion is embarrassing is the only embarrassment here.

they used many people and as for their old manager? This guy spent money on them and give them a bit of support when everyone else put them down ,then they ripped him off.

They way they done it was a disgrace.

Also,They should have the balls to contact him?

But, I hear he is waiting to serve the papers on them..

Maybe,he is waiting to have them back in UK first.

Funny,No one knows who is their management now??

I hope he sues these lads..silly boys

I wouldn’t worry, they’ll be forgotten in the next year. Theres no gap in the market for them (wannabe One Direction) and when the label realises theres no cash to be made… it’s back to reality.

My problem is that they’ve done the hard part in getting signed yet they are still whoring themselves out by covering other peoples songs. If you can’t make it off your own merit, whats the fucking point?

Oh and their posts on Facebook and Twitter, so many poser pics at every second post… tone it the fuck down! Trying to lure in the jailbait are we?

Has the label dropped them like a smelly old cum sock? I see they’ve been removed from Sony Epics artist roster.

I see they’re finally releasing some new music… no wait, it’s a compilation of covers!

Any prospect of fame is fast fading for these lads, unless they plan to tour the world as a cover band!

So 18 months on and still nothing from this boyband?
Just because they changed their name from TUCKER to DOWNTOWN DRIVE? Doesnt make them better in fact its worse and I see they are credited with the name TUCKER on the Justin B Album on teh titles track “I BELIEVE”
Glad they done that at least now their old manager who they used and ripped off can now seek damages.. and royalties from that track as he named them TUCKER, I also heard the tracks they recorded UNTHINKABLE-RADIO GAGA etc etc..HAHA their old manager should release them,,at least they might have a hit because over 18 months since going to LA they havent done anything much talking about.LA REID …Were you aware what these guys done ?On their old manager
